How Can I Prevent Mould Growth?

A mould problem in an establishment can have negative effects on the health of the occupants. It is therefore essential to adopt good habits in order to prevent the formation of mould:

1.

Avoid overwatering plants and watch for signs of mould in pots.

2.

Avoid accumulation of items such as fabrics, papers and wood. Mould can grow on anything that collects dust and holds moisture.

3.

Keep your home clean by vacuuming regularly.

4.

Fix leaks or water infiltration immediately.

5.

Make sure your kitchen and bathroom have exhaust ventilation to keep your home dry. Without this ventilation, you would have to open the windows to circulate the air. It is important to note, however, that humid outdoor air will not help dry your home.

6.

Check that your dryer is properly connected and that the ductwork is venting the humid air to the outside.

7.

Make sure bathtubs and sinks are sealed to prevent water damage to the walls.

8.

Dry all flooded or water-damaged surfaces within 48 hours.

9.

Ensure that the humidity level inside is 30% in winter and 50% in summer using a hygrometer. When the relative humidity is too high, use a dehumidifier.
